PRP is a mixture of two essential components: plasma and platelets. Plasma is the liquid portion of blood, which provides a medium for the transport of cells and proteins throughout the body. Platelets, on the other hand, are a type of blood cell that is critical for the healing process. They are widely known for their coagulation abilities, but they also contain growth factors that play a crucial role in triggering cell reproduction and stimulating tissue regeneration or healing in the treated area.
To create PRP, healthcare professionals take a sample of the patient’s blood and place it into a centrifuge, a device that rapidly spins the sample. The centrifuge separates the blood components and concentrates the platelets within the plasma. This results in blood with a higher concentration of platelets than normal, which is then used for the injection. The PRP is then injected into the area requiring treatment, where it delivers a concentrated dose of growth factors and other therapeutic agents to enhance the healing process.

What is platelet-rich plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from the blood and can stimulate the creation of collagen, epidermal tissue. As a result, it contributes to smoother, brighter, and more luxurious skin. In recent years, PRP has been found to be effective in treating both chronic and acute injuries to the musculoskeletal system, with its ability to promote chondrocyte growth and produce proteoglycans, which are crucial for cartilage and joint health, reducing pain and improving patient functionality, especially if you are affected by osteoarthritis.
The patient’s blood is centrifuged to extract PRP, which then reacts with calcium chloride to produce a high level of platelet abundance. These are known as platelets within the peripheral blood system. The blood is divided into sections by centrifugation, separating the red and white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. The centrifuged area will contain “growth factors” that promote cell division and migration. These cells are involved in clotting. These factors have the potential to stimulate the response of damaged tissues.
In Aesthetic Medicine, micropunctures are used to stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and epidermal tissue in areas of the face and body with greater flaccidity.
Why is it done?
It is an aesthetic treatment and the goal of platelet-rich plasma is to rejuvenate the skin of the face, especially in the areas around the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and between the nose and lips.
Platelet biostimulation is currently used for a variety of treatments, such as correcting stretch marks without the need for plasma rejection by patients, addressing joint degeneration, and treating post-surgical skin lesions, as well as healing ulcers and open wounds.
Active ingredients are added to platelet-rich plasma to regenerate skin cells. This leads to the generation of collagen, elastic fibers, and glycosaminoglycans. A recommended treatment is available for people in their 30s who experience a decrease in cell regeneration levels.
Preparation for Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment
During the consultation, biostimulation with platelet-rich plasma is performed without hospitalization or anesthesia, and the treatment lasts approximately half an hour. The area is cleaned and prepared for treatment, then a numbing cream is applied before the plasma is injected.
After application, the patient can resume their daily activities without any additional preparation and more.
To prevent the formation of small papules at the injection sites of the neck and décolleté, it is suggested to use creams containing arnica after applying PRP, as well as to massage your fingers into thinner skin.
In addition, it is not advisable to shower or use creams on the day the method is performed. After that, it is not recommended to go to saunas or gyms.
It is a procedure that acts little by little, the tissue is stimulated as the days go by. This treatment does not offer immediate results, however, after a few days the results will improve. Up to the maximum about 30 days after applying the treatment.
What is PRP treatment used for?
PRP injections are utilized for an array of ailments, including both musculoskeletal pain and injuries and cosmetic purposes.
Musculoskeletal Injuries and Conditions: PRP injections can address a variety of musculoskeletal issues and injuries, including chronic tendon injuries such as tennis elbow or jumper’s knee. These injections can help to speed up the healing process, decrease pain and allow for a quicker return to normal activities.
Postoperative Healing: PRP was initially utilized to expedite healing after jaw or plastic surgeries. Nowadays, post-surgical PRP injections are used to aid in the recovery of muscles, tendons. And ligaments as these procedures tend to have lengthy recovery times.
Osteoarthritis Treatment: Studies suggest that PRP injections may be effective in treating osteoarthritis-related pain. And stiffness by regulating the joint environment and reducing inflammation. However, research is ongoing.
Hair Restoration: PRP injections can be a successful treatment for male pattern baldness. Both in preventing hair loss and promoting new hair growth. Additionally, PRP can also aid in the stimulation of hair growth following hair transplants.
Anti-Aging: PRP injections are sometimes used as an anti-aging treatment, however. There is limited evidence to support its effectiveness in reducing wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Advantage of PRP
In addition to its healing benefits, PRP treatment can also be used to address hair loss. And stimulate the growth of hair transplants. The process involves injecting PRP into the scalp, which can help revitalize hair follicles and promote hair growth. Moreover, it can also be used to enhance the outcomes of various cosmetic procedures such as facials, skin resurfacing, and facial rejuvenation.
The results of PRP treatment are most noticeable after several weeks for joint injections and six months for scalp injections. However, it’s important to note that these results are not permanent. And patients may need to undergo additional treatments at the direction of their doctor.
One of the benefits of PRP treatment is its safety. Since the injections are derived from the patient’s own blood. There is a lower risk of adverse reactions compared to other injectable medications. Additionally, PRP injections can be administered alone or used in conjunction with other procedures, making it a versatile treatment option.
PRP Therapy Risks and Side Effects
While PRP treatment is considered a low-risk procedure, there are some risks and side effects to be aware of. The procedure involves a blood draw. So patients should ensure they are well hydrated and have eaten prior to the procedure to prevent feeling lightheaded. After the procedure, some soreness and bruising at the injection site is common. But these symptoms typically resolve on their own within a few days.
Less common risks of PRP treatment include bleeding, tissue damage, infection, and nerve injury. However, these risks are rare and can be minimized by seeking treatment from a qualified and experienced healthcare provider.
