What types of penile implants exist?
There are two types of penile implants that can be used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). The more common type is inflatable devices, which can be inflated to create an erection and deflated when not in use. Three-piece inflatable implants consist of a fluid-filled reservoir implanted under the abdominal wall, a pump, and a release valve placed inside the scrotum, and two inflatable cylinders inside the penis. To achieve an erection, the fluid is pumped from the reservoir into the cylinders, and the valve is released to drain the fluid back into the reservoir after use. A two-piece model is also available, with the fluid reservoir as part of the pump implanted in the scrotum.
The second type is semi rigid rods, which are always firm and can be bent away from the body for sexual activity and towards the body for concealment. There are also positionable penile implants that use a central series of segments held together with a spring on each end to maintain upward and downward positions better than other semi-rigid rods. Special designs are also available to accommodate a shortened or larger-than-average penis.

What Happens During the Procedure?
